Deeper Roots

Spiritual Formation at City Church

Spiritual formation is the process of becoming like Jesus. Learning to live like him requires us to practice spiritual disciplines, walk in community with other believers, and regularly engage both His Word and Spirit.

Dallas Willard says spiritual formation is:

“Those processes through which people are inwardly transformed in such a way that the personality and deeds of Jesus Christ naturally flow out from them when and wherever they are.”

Below are the opportunities for spiritual formation at City Church. Click the button below if you’d like to grow as a disciple (apprentice) of Jesus through any of these practices.

Baptism

“Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ.” (Acts 2:38)

Following Jesus begins with this exciting step of obedience that represents the end to our old patterns of living and a new life with Christ Jesus.

Sunday Worship

“This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me.” (Luke 22:19)

Worship forms us, and New Testament Worship invites all of us to participate. Through the Word, Communion, and Participatory Worship, we are strengthened and formed into image of Jesus. One way to empower our Sunday Worship is to join a Sunday Serve Team. Serving forms us.

Community Groups

“All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals, and to prayer.” (Acts 2:42)

We are meant to be a part of family, a community that cares for and supports one another helping each other grow. At our community groups, we eat together, laugh together, pray together, and dig deeper into the the themes of our Sunday messages with the goal of helping each other live like Jesus in our neighborhoods.

Bible Reading Plan

“They delight in the law of the Lord, meditating on it day and night… and they prosper in all they do.” (Psalm 1:2)

Regular Bible reading allows us to put roots down in our relationship with God and his truth creating an environment for growth! Whether you are new to the Bible or have been reading it for some time, you are welcome to follow our Fall and Spring semester Bible reading plans.

Prayer

“If two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I among them.” (Matthew 18:19-20)

God meets with us when we pray. We have men’s early morning prayer (first Fridays) and women’s pre-service prayer (third Sundays) each month.

Trios (Next Steps)

“‘Do you understand what you are reading?’ And he said, ‘How can I, unless someone guides me?’ And he invited Philip to come up and sit with him.” (Acts 8:30-31)

Sometimes we need some guidance about what the next step is for us in our spiritual journey. Trios are smaller groups (usually a group of 3) that help you take that next step whether it is a study exploring the basics of Christianity, mentorship in particular area, or simply regular encouragement in embracing spiritual disciplines. Whatever it is, there is someone at City Church who would be happy to come alongside you to help you take that next step.

They are like trees planted along a riverbank,
with roots that reach deep into the water.
Such trees are not bothered by the heat
or worried by long months of drought.
Their leaves stay green,
and they never stop producing fruit.

(Jeremiah 17:8)
